CHIEF of defence staff General Abayomi Olonisakin has allayed fears that the recent bombing of a Maiduguri mosque by Boko Haram represents a resurgence by the terrorists adding that on the contrary it is a sign of their weakening.
Yesterday, Boko Haram detonated a massive bomb in the Borno State capital which is believed to have killed about 30 people. According to General Olonisakin, this hitting of soft targets is Boko Haram's response to increased attacks by the Nigerian military and a sign that it is on the wane.
Speaking yesterday in Abuja at the 2015 Nigerian Navy Research and Development seminar, themed Innovation and Research and Development : Turning Bright Ideas to Operational Solutions, General Olonisakin said the Nigerian military will keep up the pressure on the terrorists. President Muhammadu Buhari has given commanders a December deadline to wipe out the terrorists.
General Olonisakin said: “The issue of suicide bombings that we have been witnessing is as a result of the pressure on the Boko Haram terrorists in the northeast. They are now aiming at soft targets, so Nigerians must be security conscious and report any suspicious movement around them because security is everybody’s business.
“The pressure has been on them and they are fanning out, so, in the process of fanning out they are hitting the soft target. However, we must be wary and be security conscious, report any area where you observe suspicious movement or activities in your area.”
He also dismissed reports that some of the Chibok Girls had been liberated, adding that the military is working hard to bring them and other captives back home as soon as practicable. In addition, General Olonisakin explained that the military is working to come up with a strategy to effectively tackle vandalism, illegal bunkering and every issue associated with oil and gas as it plans to take over the security of the sector.
Yesterday's bombing, which took place around 6pm, involved two blasts near a mosque in Mulai, some 6km away from Maiduguri along the Maiduguri-Biu highway. Eyewitnesses say the blasts were carried out by two suicide bombers.
