NIGERIA'S ongoing feud between Fulani cattle herders and local farming communities took a nasty turn yesterday when herdsmen killed a member of the traditional rulers’ cabinet in Eke community in Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State.
Over recent months, cattle rearers have been involved in incessant clashes with local communities across the country as disputes rage over the damage rampaging cows cause. In many cases, local communities say the cattle destroy their crops, while in turn, the herders accuse people of stealing and killing their livestock.
This has resulted in Fulani cattle herders arming themselves with sophisticated weapons like AK47 assault rifles and some of the clashes have been very bloody. Earlier this month, Fulani cattle herders kidnapped the former secretary to the federal government and finance minister Chief Olu Falae after he and them were involved in several disputes on his farm near Akure, the Ondo State capital.
It now appears that the crisis has spread to the southeast of the country after a bitter and bloody clash in Enugu State yesterday. Following the clash, Fulani herdsmen, killed Tamgbo Ogueji, a traditional chief aged 85, who was allegedly shot in his house in the early hours over an undisclosed issue.
Anthony Enu, the president of the Eke Town Union, said: “Last year, the same Fulani herdsmen killed two of our brothers Matthew Aniugo and Chiagha Chigbo in their farms. The town is boiling with anger now.
“We have reported the matter to the police. We are calling on all relevant authorities to prevail on these Fulani herdsmen to ensure justice for our people.”
