FORMER Benue State governor Gabriel Suswam's wife Yemisi narrowly avoided being lynched to death by an irate mob in Abuja who were protesting the continued denial of access to their shops at the Wuye Ultra Modern Market.
Yemisi Suswam, the ex-governor's wife is said to be a major financier of the market developed by the All Purpose Shelter Development Company. It has since been let out to traders but they have accused the management of extortion and preventing them accessing their stalls which they have paid for.
Over the weekend, Ms Suswam visited the market and narrowly escaped being stoned to death after being held hostage for several hours. Traders had accused her of conniving with the authorities of the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) to not only extort money from them but also deny them access to the shops they have since paid for.
Chief Ifeanyi Ezejim, the chairman of the Association of Wuye Ultra Modern Market Allottees, said the traders paid various amounts of money ranging between N2,000 to N8,000 as allocation fees to the FCDA. He therefore asked the FCDA authorities to give them the statutory fees so that they can pay and move into their shops to start their businesses.
According to Chief Ezejim, an order of an Abuja High Court had asked the FCDA to declare the statutory fees for the shops but this had not obeyed. He added that it appears that certain people now believe themselves to be above the law and are using the police to stop the traders from doing their businesses.
“The intimidation is too much and I don’t know the type of country we are that the police who supposed to be adhering to the law of the land are going against the law. We are not happy with the conduct of the Nigeria police today.
“We have gone to the FCDA and they did not say that we have no allocation here. They did not say we did not pay for allocation of shops here even though we are hearing rumour here now that FCDA said that we did not pay anything," Chief Ezejim added.
