NFF stops paying players match bonuses in cash and will remit payments into accounts

altNIGERIAN Football Federation (NFF) officials have revealed that the Super Eagles players will no longer be paid their match bonuses in cash but have the amounts transferred to their bank accounts from henceforth.

For years, match bonuses have been a big issue of contention between the NFF and the players as unpaid allowances have frequently led to disruptions in camp. Apart from the fact that both sides have bickered over the amount to be paid, the NFF has frequently reneged on remitting monies.

However, after several public tows, the NFF opted to pay the players in cash in the dressing room after every match. In an alteration of this policy, however, the NFF has ordered all the players to open accounts with a particular local bank, into which their bonuses will now be paid into.

This new regime will take effect as from next month's World Cup qualifier, when the Eagles are expected to face Swaziland.  NFF officials have opted for the change in line with President Muhammadu Buhari’s new financial policy as it concerns foreign currencies.

One player said: “We have been asked to open foreign currency accounts with a bank where our bonuses will now be paid.”

During the last World Cup, former sports minister Tammy Danagogo, flew to Brazil with over $3m to pay the team appearance bonuses. Under the new regime, this will no longer happen as the players will have the money remitted straight into their accounts for immediate withdrawal.
