Yola Muslims defy Boko Haram and turn out en masse to pray for bomb victims

altMUSLIM worshipers in the Adamawa State capital Yola have defied Boko Haram and turned out in their thousands to observe the weekly Friday Jumat prayers despite a horrific bombing last week that killed over 30 people.

Although the Nigerian Army has regained the initiative against Boko Haram and seized a lot of territory from it, the sect is still able to carry out ghastly suicide bombings. Last week, it planted a bomb at Yola's Jambutu Central Mosque but despite that, yesterday, worshippers turned out en masse at the same mosque to pray for those people killed in the blast.

Sheikh Muhammad Awwal Ibn Usman, the chief imam of the mosque, led worshippers in prayers during the service. In his sermon, he told the worshippers to defy fear and threats of attacks saying they were meant, to stop them but by Allah’s grace, they will not succeed.

“You have demonstrated resilience and belief in the religion because in spite of last Friday's bomb blast outside this mosque during which many lives were lost, I can see an unprecedented turnout of worshippers at the mosque," Sheikh Usman added.

Worshipper, Abubakar Ahmad, said: “I felt at home while praying to Allah to expose those behind the attack on our mosque and several other attacks on innocent Nigerians. I have the belief that very soon, their end will come since they have brought the unholy war to the very domain of Allah.

Yusuf Osama, an official of the First Aid group Jama’atul Izalatul Bid’ah Wa iqamatus Sunnah, said he decided to worship at the mosque in order to express his grievances over the tragic loss of his loved ones and to send a message to the perpetrators of the attack that they cannot stop him from practicing Islam. He added that police officers and members of religious aid groups were at strategic positions conducting searches at the single entrance road to the mosque.

At the police barracks Jumma’at mosque where government officials including the speaker of Adamawa State House of Assembly, Kabiru Mijinyawa, worship, scanners and bomb detectives were used utilised. Ahmad Suleiman, the chief imam of the mosque, admonished worshippers to attend prayers early.
