As Audu dies from poll-induced stoke naturalised Lagosian Falake set to become governor

altREPORTS from Lokoja have revealed that the former governor and winner of yesterday's gubernatorial election Prince Abubakar Audu died from a stroke after receiving word that the polls were inconclusive and he could not be formally declared the winner.

Prince Audu, 68, has been unwell for a while and over the last week, has scaled down the number of campaign meetings he has been attending. In yesterday's election, he took a commanding lead over incumbent governor Idris Wada of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) but had not been declared winner because of a few results still pending.

Early this morning, the Independent National Electoral Commission (Inec) announced that the results remained inconclusive and it could not yet formally declare Prince Audu's All Progressives Congress (APC) the victor. Apparently, it was upon hearing this that the former governor suffered a stroke, collapsed and died.

Apparently, he had complained of stomach cramps before going to bed last night and then suffered an initial stroke this morning around 9am. Later in the afternoon, after Inec declared the election inconclusive, Prince Audu suffered another stroke and passed away.

One APC source in Lokoja confirmed:  “He is dead. My friends in APC just confirmed this to me.”

Prince Audu is from Ogbonicha-Alloma in Ofu Local Government Area of the state and will now be buried there tomorrow according to Islamic rites. With Inec almost certain to declare the APC winners of yesterday's elections, Prince Audu's running mate Hon James Abiodun Faleke, a legislator representing a constituency in Lagos State, look set to become governor.

Hon Falake, from Ekinrin Adde in Ijumu Local Government Area of the old Kabba province, has a master’s degree in Business Administration and is a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply, London and the Institute of Public Administration. He has been criticised for being a naturalised Lagosian and unaware if local Kogi politics.
