Chelsea table offer for Golden Eaglets skipper Kelechi Nwakali in bid to sign him up

altENGLISH Premiership giants Chelsea have joined in the race to sign Golden Eaglets skipper Kelechi Nwakali initiating a desperate bid to bring him to Stanford Bridge and fight off competition from other clubs.

Manchester City and West Ham signified an interest for the talented teenager but are believed to have pulled out of the race due to problems they will encounter in securing a work permit. Earlier this month, Kelechi said that given the choice, he would opt to play for Arsenal but the Gunners are yet to follow up their initial enquiry.

Klay Ekeocha, Kelechi's agent, has signed an agreement with the same agency that looks after Real Madrid’s Welsh star Gareth Bale to look after the player's interest. According to Ekeocha, clubs from Italy and Greece are also interested in securing the service of the player, who turned 17 last Monday.

Mr Ekeocha said: “We are in contact with Chelsea, Udinese and Olympiacos and we are working hard for the player, his family and academy. Manchester City and West Ham are no longer involved because of the work permit issues and we got in touch with Arsenal but there’s no feed-back yet.”

He added that Udinese made a ridiculous offer of €800,000 for Kelechi, who was voted the Most Valuable Player of the recently concluded Fifa Under 17 World Cup. Kelechi was the standout player at the U17 World Cup in Chile after helping the Golden Eaglets win the tourney for a record fifth time, scoring three goals and helping with three assists in seven matches.

Kelechi's older brother Chidiebere, is already on Manchester City's books after being signed up alongside Kelechi Iheanacho after the 2013 U17 World Cup and the club has been looking at him lately. Nwakali, an all round midfielder who passes the ball brilliantly, scores goals, tackles ferociously and gets back to help his defence, appears to be Nigeria's long tern replacement for Mikel Obi.
