FORMER petroleum minister Diezani Alison-Madueke who is facing corruption and money laundering charges in the UK has successfully undergone cancer surgery at a private London clinic.
Last month, Ms Alison-Madueke was arrested at her west London home by the UK's National Crime Agency (NCA) and taken to Charing Cross Police Station, where she was quizzed for several hours. She was later released on bail to appear in court on Monday where an injunction was obtained to seize £27,000 from her.
She is expected to be formally charged soon with money laundering but to prevent her absconding before then, her passport has been seized and a court has prevented Ms Alison-Madueke from leaving the UK. Also, the court ruled that the cash seized from her can be held for six months when she is expected to be arraigned after investigations.
Despite her woes, Ms Alison-Madueke, underwent successful surgery according to a family source has revealed. Since leaving office in May, Ms Alison-Madueke has taken up residence in the UK, claiming that she is unwell.
One family source said: “The Madueke family, like most other families, have their own challenges. For instance, Mrs Diezani Alison-Madueke has been receiving treatment for cancer in the UK which started while she was in office and the health crisis has unfortunately exacerbated in recent times.”
Britain's NCA, which leads the UK law enforcement’s fight to cut serious and organised crime, is working in league with Nigeria's Economic and Financial Crimes Commission in the probe of the former minister. Among other things, the NCS has a national and international mandate and powers to work in partnership with other law enforcement organisations to bring the full weight of the law to bear on serious crime and organised criminals.
