LAGOS State Safety Commission officials have shut down Shoprite's facility in the Ikeja Shopping Mall for breaching health and safety regulations after it was discovered to be selling expired and outdated foodstuffs.
South African owned Shoprite has spurred the recent retail boom in Nigeria, opening outlets in all the major cities, tapping into the consumer demand of the growing middle class. However, the retail giant has been discovered to be flouting health regulations by selling expired food products to unsuspecting customers.
In Lagos, safety commission officials stormed the Ikeja facility yesterday, drove everyone out and sealed off the massive premises, placing a seal order at the entrance. They apparently acted on complaints by members of the public about adulterated and expired products being sold in the outlet.
One customer said she once bought expired milk at Shoprite, saying that the closure of the outlet was long overdue. There have also been complaints by others about expired products at various Shoprite outlets.
One other customer said she was disappointed that the place was shut down as she wanted to purchase certain items for the weekend, while others also expressed disappointment that Shoprite could breach safety standards. Shoprite, which is listed on Namibia Stock Exchange and Zambian Stock Exchange is a South African-based retail and fast food company, which operates over 1,200 corporate and 270 franchise outlets in 16 countries across Africa and the Indian Ocean Islands.
