NIGERIA'S acting high commissioner to the UK Ambassador Olakunle Bamgbose has been promoted to the position of permanent secretary and redeployed to Abuja as part of President Muhammadu Buhari's shake up of the civil service.
Appointed deputy high commissioner in September last year, Ambassador Bamgbose has been acting as the head of the mission since the recall of the substantive high commissioner Dr Dalhatu Tafida earlier this year. However, under a set or wide-ranging reforms announced yesterday, Ambassador Bamgbose will now become the permanent secretary in the political affairs office, in the office of the secretary to the federal government.
Under the changes announced yesterday, President Buhari appointed 18 new permanent secretaries some of whom were recruited from the private sector. Among the appointments were Louis Edozien and Dr Mahmoud Isa-Dutse, two professionals with proven track records in the private sector.
Mr Edozien, who was deployed to the Federal Ministry of Power, was the executive director of the Niger Delta Power Holding Company, where he was responsible for the technical and project management of the federal government’s $8bn investment in the National Integrated Power Projects. Dr Isa-Dutse was appointed the new permanent secretary at the Federal Ministry of Finance, bringing along over 20 years banking experience, having worked from UBA, Savannah Bank of Nigeria, Guaranty Trust Bank, Continental Merchant Bank and Gamji Bank.
Other new permanent secretaries include Mrs Ayotunde Adesugba, Taiwo Abidogun, Dr Bukar Hassan, Mrs Wakama Asifieka, Jalal Ahmad Arabi, Sabiu Zakari, Mrs Obiageli Nwokedi and Aminu Nabegu. Others are Alo Nwankwo, Dr Shehu Ahmed, Ogbonnaya Kalu, Mrs Nuratu Batagarawa, Christian Ohaa, Bassey Apkanyung and Dr Ugo Roy.
President Buhari also approved the deployment of several old permanent secretaries and according to his spokesman Femi Adesina, the appointments and deployments were with effect from yesterday, November 10, 2015. Before the appointment of the new permanent secretaries, President Buhari had retired 17 of the permanent secretaries.
With the redeployment of Ambassador Bamgbose, the Nigerian mission in the UK has either a high commissioner or a deputy. By far the largest mission in the world, it us about twice the size of any other embassy and the high commissioner in London is generally a close ally of the president.
