Nigeria has fifth highest number of EU migrants which is expected to boost economy

altNIGERIA has been listed as the country with the fifth highest number of migrants venturing into Europe in a recent European Commission (EC) report indicating that the current influx of migrants could boost the community's gross domestic product by between 0.2% and 0.3%.

According to the report, Syria, Afghanistan, Iraq, Eritrea and Nigeria are the countries with the five largest migrant populations currently travelling in the European Union at the moment. At the moment, about 3m migrants who are fleeing war and poverty are expected to enter the European Union (EU) by 2017, which is expected to have a marginal positive impact on the economy of the continent.

Syria accounts for 53% of the migrants, followed by Afghanistan with 18% while Iraq who is placed third accounts for 6% of all migrants. Most of these migrants are fleeing the war in their countries but the story of Eritrea which accounts for 5% of migrants and that of Nigeria which has 3% of the total, can be put down to poverty, conflict and human rights abuse.

EU economic commissioner Pierre Moscovici, said he believes that the influx of migrants could boost gross domestic product by between 0.2% and 0.3%. He added that the weak but positive economic effect of the migrants could help offset growing hostility towards them.

Mr Moscovici said: “It means you can’t say the influx of refugees is likely to have a negative impact or kicking people out of the labour market. That will combat a certain number of perceived ideas and back the politics of EC president Jean-Claude Juncker, who has pushed for the EU to do more to help them.

Furthermore, the EC, the executive arm of the 28-nation EU, said it expects 1m migrant arrivals in 2015 and this should soar to 1.5m in 2016 then decrease to 500,000 in 2017. United Nations refugee officials say more than 750,000 migrants have arrived in the EU by sea so far this year, up from 282,000 in the whole of 2014.

Of those coming by sea, the vast majority have arrived in Greece, with a total of 608,000 migrants landing there. Some 140,000 migrants have arrived in Italy in 2015.

Most of the migrants head for Germany, hoping to get asylum there. German officials say their country is likely to host at least 800,000 new migrants this year and the total could reach 1.5m.
