TARABA State remains in a political limbo as Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governor Darius Ishaku continues to run its affairs despite a high court ruling declaring the All Progressives Congress's (APC) Senator Aisha Alhassan winner of the April 25 elections.
Originally, Governor Ishaku was declared the winner of the polls by the Independent National Electoral Commission (Inec) by Senator Alhassan filed a suit at the election tribunal challenging his victory. Earlier this month, the tribunal declared Senator Alhassan the duly elected governor, ruling that Governor Ishaku was not properly selected as a candidate by the PDP.
Despite the ruling, however, Senator Alhassan is yet to be sworn in or resume duty and last week was appointed as federal minister for women's affairs by President Muhammadu Buhari. In a further sign that it does not appear that she will be taking office anytime soon, Governor Ishaku named a 20-man cabinet over the weekend and swore the commissioners into office.
On Saturday, Governor Ishaku returned to Jalingo, the state capital from Abuja and thousands of his supporters lined the street to welcome him. He was received by his wife, Anna, government officials and other well-wishers at about midday on Saturday, after which he and his entourage proceeded to the Jolly Nyame Sports Complex to swear in the commissioners.
At the event, Governor Ishaku's supporters reaffirmed their mandate commitment to him using placards with various inscriptions demonstrating their dissatisfaction with the tribunal’s verdict. Since it was delivered, the judgment has been greeted with mixed reactions with criticism from laymen and experts who opined that it was a monumental flaw in judicial practice.
In his address, the governor assured the people that he is overwhelmed with their show of solidarity, adding that he will defend the mandate given to him. His appointees took their oaths of office and oaths of allegiance administered by the chief judge of the state, represented by Justice Nehemiah Andetur in the gymnasium hall of the complex.
Governor Ishaku urged the new appointees to prepare their minds and key into the rescue mission of the state in order to meet the urgent developmental needs of the state. He also used the occasion to officially launch the Rescue Taraba Project, a booklet of his governing stratagem which contains the way forward for his administration.
At the event, the governor presented the booklet as a guide for his commissioners as it captures the purpose, goal and the objectives of the administration. He further noted that the rescue mission primarily covers three areas including the economy, social amenities and their cross-cutting sectors.
