APC's Kaduna chapter set to suspend Senator Sani for criticising Governor El-Rufai

altKADUNA North Senatorial District's senator Shehu Sani is set to be suspended by the state chapter of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) for standing up to Governor Nasir El-Rufai of late.

Of late, Senator Sani has been a big critic of Governor El-Rufai, condemning the governor for criticising those who opposed his appointments and castigating the governor for organising the recent Kaduna Carnival. Senator Sani accused the governor of being insensitive to the plight of the Kaduna people by organising a music festival as the country faces economic and security challenges.

A human rights veteran and community activist, Senator Sani distinguished himself as being the only member of the senate to publicly declare his assets upon being elected. Earlier on in the year, he and Governor El-Rufai were close allies but they have fallen out repeatedly of last as the outspoken senator has expressed displeasure with the way Kaduna State in being run.

Yesterday, the Kaduna State chapter of the APC sent a letter to Senator Shehu Sani inviting him to appear before a disciplinary committee set up by acting chairman Shuaibu Idris, within seven days. In the letter, he was asked to come and explain himself and clear his name over what the party termed an anti-party stand.

However, senator Sani’s spokesman Comrade Suleiman Ahmed, said the letter was rejected on grounds that the senator neither knows the person who signed the letter nor the party office address. It is thus unlikely that the senator will be appearing before the disciplinary committee.

Comrade Ahmed said: "If the address of the party office in Kaduna he knew has been changed, Senator Shehu Sani was supposed to be informed, in the same vein, if an acting chairman was appointed, he should have been notified. From now till 2019, Senator Shehu Sani will continue to challenge any El-Rufai policy suspected or adjudged to be anti masses.”

Irked by his reaction, the APC said it would discipline the senator, saying that no one was above the party. It is unclear if President Muhammadu Buhari or the APC high command in Abuja will intervene in the dispute.
