Bayelsa police say five men trailing Goodluck were not militants but lost APC members

altPOLICE in Bayelsa State have revealed that the five All Progressives Congress (APC) members arrested yesterday for trailing former president Dr Goodluck Jonathan were not ex-militants or assassins but party members who ended up following the wrong convoy.

Yesterday, the five men were arrested for trailing Dr Jonathan and it was thought that they might be former militants hired to do the former president harm. However, after investigating their story, the Bayelsa State Police Command said they were just APC members who ended up following the wrong convoy.

On December 5, Bayelsans go to the polls to elect a governor in a tight race between former governor Chief Timipre Sylva of the APC and incumbent Governor Seriake Dickson of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Dr Jonathan was in the state yesterday, to campaign for Governor Dickson when the mix-up happened.

Asimin Butswat, a Bayelsa State Police Command spokesman, said: "They were not militants as our preliminary investigation showed that these were not ex-militants but boys who mistook the former president ‘s convoy for their principal. We are still investigating the incident.”

Dr Jonathan was alleged to have been trailed by the men who were said to have intercepted and drove into a short motorcade conveying him from the Julius Berger Bridge area of the state capital. They trailed and chased the motorcade to the entrance of the private residence of the former president at the Kpansia suburb of Yenagoa before they were overpowered and arrested by a combined team of security operatives.
