FORMER senate president Senator David Mark has received the endorsement of the Christian Association of Nigeria (Can) in his bid to get re-elected to represent the Benue South Senatorial Constituency.
On November 28, the Court of Appeal nullified Senator Mark's election to represent the Benue South Senatorial seat after judges ruled that he was declared the winner illegally. Fresh elections must be conducted within 90 days and Senator Mark has commenced already campaigning in earnest, hoping to get returned.
In a big boost to his campaign, Senator Mark has received the endorsement of the Benue State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria. Reverend Father Emmanuel Odufu, the chairman of the Benue South chapter of Can, paid a solidarity visit to Senator Mark’s Otukpo country home yesterday, where he said that the endorsement is the unanimous decision of their followers.
Reverend Father Odufu told Senator Mark that it is the consensus of Can, especially in Benue South, to identify and support him in the forthcoming re-run. According to Father Odufu, among the various projects and achievements Senator Mark has brought to the area include the multi-purpose Otobi Water Dam, the Oweto/Loko Bridge, health centres, schools and more importantly, the annual scholarship awards to students.
He added: “For us we are pleased and very comfortable with you. Your sterling leadership qualities and record of achievements speak for you, so we stand by you and we shall be with you all through."
Nigeria's longest serving senator, having assumed office in 1999, Senator Mark is a leading member of the People's Democratic Party, (PDP) and has been touted as a possible future presidential candidate. Some groups in Benue State have asked him to stand down for a younger candidate but he has so far refused to.
