NEW Ooni of Ife Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi faced his first major challenge since assuming office after it emerged that the corpse of the traditional prime minister Chief Solomon Omisakin has been stolen by suspected ritualists.
Chief Omisakin, who was the traditional prime minister died on October 15 shortly before Oba Ogunwusi, was announced as the new Ooni. He was due to be buried on Friday morning but some cultists believed to be members of the Isoro cult group in Ile Ife seized his corpse from Iremo Quarters in Ile-Ife, just before it was released.
This development created confusion about what to do at the Iremo Palace of the late Chief Obalufe, who was the head of the Ife kingmakers and administered the town in-between monarchs. It is believed that members of the Ogboni Confraternity were the ones who seized the corpse but this has been denied by the group.
Chief Olajide Faloba, the Obadio of Ife, who is the head of the Isoro cult, said his group knew nothing about the incident. He said Chief Obalufe was not indebted to Isoro in anyway, saying he would have been informed if those who seized the corpse were members of his cult.
However, different sources confirmed that the corpse was seized by the cult, who demanded N500,000 (£1,700) and other items from children of the deceased before they could be allowed to bury their father. The seizure caused a delay as the family could not bury the dead in the morning the interment was scheduled.
It is believed that the family members paid an undisclosed amount and bought some items for sacrifice for the members of the group who disrupted the burial before the remains of Chief Obalufe were interred later on Friday evening. It is not clear if the Ooni will take any action against those who seized the corpse.
