Kaduna chapter of APC suspends Senator Shehu Sani from the party for 11 months

altKADUNA North senatorial district's Senator Shehu Sani has been suspended from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) for 11 months after he has found guilty of anti-party activities by a disciplinary committee.

Of late, Senator Sani has been a big critic of Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai, condemning the governor for criticising those who opposed his appointments and castigating him for organising the recent Kaduna Carnival. Senator Sani accused the governor of being insensitive to the plight of the Kaduna people by organising a music festival as the country faces economic and security challenges.

In response, the Kaduna State chapter of the APC sent a letter to Senator Sani inviting him to appear before a disciplinary committee set up by acting chairman Shuaibu Idris. However, Senator Sani shunned the invitation and subsequently, the APC's Tudun Wada ward, where he is registered in Kaduna State, suspended the senator from the party.

In a letter sent to Senator Sani dated December 27, the chapter of the party said that the suspension was for a period of 11 months and that, henceforth, the senator is disengaged from partaking in or attending party activities in Kaduna State. Signed by the secretary of the ward, Ahmed Abdulhamid, public relations officer, Auwal Mai Anguwa and ex-officio member Aminu Alilan, the letter said Senator Sani was being suspended for various offences.

It listed his offences to include, uttering statements that allegedly violated the rules of engagement of the party, factionalising the party and engaging in anti-party activities by criticising the policies of Governor Nasir el-Rufai. Also, the party said the senator had chosen to remain in constant confrontation with the government of Kaduna State.

“Hardly a week passes by that his group will not be on air criticising and challenging the enduring legacies of Mallam Nasir el-Rufai. Also, his statements on national issues is not in conformity with that of the state government and government of Kaduna State,” the letter added.

However, senator Sani's spokesman Suleiman Ahmed, said it was clear that those who wrote the letter were ignorant of the laws guiding the APC. He added that although it was clear from the letter that the people were out to stop the senator from expressing his views about what he considered as the anti-people policies of the El-Rufai administration, the move would not stop him from expressing his views.

“They are toeing the line of the state secretariat of the party, so our reaction is that those that wrote this letter are ignorant of the party’ constitution and they are dancing to the tune of the state executive of the party and Governor Nasir el-Rufai,” Mr Ahmed added.
