KOGI State governor Idris Wada has finally conceded defeat in the recent gubernatorial elections and has set up a transition committee to facilitate handover to incoming government of Alhaji Yahaya Bello due to take over on January 27.
Last weekend, the Independent National Electoral Commission (Inec) declared Alhaji Bello of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the governor-elect following the conclusion of supplementary elections. Although the election is still subject to numerous legal challenges from both within the APC and Governor Wada's Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), he has agreed to hand over come the set date.
To be headed by Prof. Olugbemiro Jegede, the secretary to the Kogi State government, the committee will manage the process leading to the handover. According to Governor Wada, the committee, will work with a similar committee set up by the APC to ensure a smooth transition.
In addition, Governor Wada has also set up a steering committee to be headed by deputy governor Yomi Awoniyi. Despite this, Governor Wada vowed to challenge the result of the election in court, saying he wanted to seek interpretation of the law and relevant sections of the 1999 constitution and the Electoral Act in connection with the election.
Meanwhile, Hon Abiodun Faleke, the running mate to late Prince Abubakar Audu in the elections, returned to the chambers of House of Representatives yesterday to a warm reception from his colleagues. Upon entering the chambers, Hon Faleke was greeted with a round of applause from his colleagues and made straight to the speaker, Hon Yakubu Dogara, with whom he held a brief conversation.
After the meeting, Hon Faleke made his way to his seat as he acknowledged greetings and cheers from his colleagues and others on the floor. There was no show of strains of the electioneering rigours on the lawmaker, who was said to have transferred his voter card to Kogi to enable him participate in the election.
Hon Faleke has said he would not make himself available for swearing-in as deputy governor alongside Alhaji Bello on January 27. According to Hon Faleke, he is the bonafide governor-elect of Kogi State and he has gone to court seeking to get himself declared so.
