ECONOMIC and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) official Abdulrahman Mohammed Biu has been arrested for extortion after it emerged that he received a $150,000 from some military officers involved in the ongoing Dasukigate scandal.
Seconded to the EFCC from the Nigeria Police Force, Deputy Detective Superintendent (DDS) Biu was arrested following intelligence reports alleging that he took the money on the pretext that he would help give the involved officers get a soft landing in the ongoing investigation into the arms deal scandal. Upon his arrest, a search was executed on his residence in Abuja where large sums of cash were recovered.
Monet found at his house included $20,000 cash, N500,000 cash, two police uniforms bearing his name with the ranks of Deputy Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent, Police warrant card No: 27/2014. Also found were documents relating to the military arms investigation and the bank account details of several senior military officers.
A search of his car parked in the premises yielded and unbranded pistol with a magazine and ten live rounds of ammunitions. According to the EFCC, DDS Biu’s modus operandi included dropping the names of ranking officers of the commission, claiming he was acting on their behalf.
During the search, papers containing seven of such names were recovered in his house. Upon his arrest, DDS Biu is believed to have made useful statements to his interrogators, although the investigation continues.
