FORMER Anambra State governor Chief Jim Nwobodo has abandoned the Anglican faith and converted to Catholicism surprisingly tying the knot with his new wife Patricia at the Bishops Court in Enugu.
Chief Nwobodo, 75, was the governor of old Anambra State between 1979 and 1983 and up until last week, was a leading member of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). In what has been an eventful week for the former governor, he ditched the PDP and joined the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and has now got married.
Yesterday, the Catholic Bishop of Enugu diocese, Most Reverend Dr Calistus Onaga, joined Chief Nwobodo and his wife in holy matrimony. Enugu State governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, and his wife, Monica, were sponsors of the couple in the marriage in fulfilment of the requirements demanded by the Catholic Church.
Speaking at the brief ceremony, the governor thanked God for the successful wedding and prayed that the union grows from strength to strength. In his sermon, Reverend Father Peter Akpunonu recalled the past cordial relationship between Chief Jim Nwobodo and the Catholic Church, especially when he was the governor of the old Anambra State.
He added that the long association informed the decision of Chief Nwobodo to join Catholic Church having been impressed by his association with the church. Reverend father Akpunonu thanked Chief Nwobodo for having the courage to embrace Catholicism.
In a brief remark, Chief Nwobodo observed he felt fulfilled to have fully joined the Catholic Church. He described the development as a home coming and spiritual thing and assured that he would remain in the church which he said he trusts and believes in.
