Nigerian Police Force honours promise to educate the children of its innocent victims

altNIGERIA'S Police Force has honoured its pledge pay for the education of the children of all innocent people killed either accidentally or unlawfully in an extra-judiciary manner by its men and officers.

Four months, the inspector general of police Solomon Arase, made the promise after an innocent member of the public Comfort Udoh was shot dead by Corporal Musefiu Aremu. Yesterday, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, said the inspector general remains committed to instilling discipline in officers and men of the force.

While presenting the scholarship to Ms Udoh's family in Lagos, Mr Owoseni handed over cheque to her husband Godwin Udoh, who was also shot at the jaw by the dismissed corporal. Mr Udoh expressed gratitude to the inspector general of police but said that his wife is still lying in the mortuary and will only rest in peace when she gets justice.

Mr Owoseni said: "The police is starting a trust fund and the first leg of the fund covers scholarship for the education of the four kids from primary to secondary school. This is the first step to help families like this and families of indigent officers and those who died in service and we are positive that the foundation will be expanded to do more in the coming years."

Mr Udoh added: "I am grateful to God for seeing me and my four children through this difficult period of our lives.  I am still undergoing treatment and my jaw hurts because it shakes anytime I try to talk.

"The doctor said I need to undergo a corrective surgery abroad to stop the jaw from shaking but I don't have the money for such treatment and my late wife is still lying in the mortuary. I am appealing to the judiciary to speed up the trial so that my late wife's killer will be made to face the wrath of the law so that she will rest in peace but I express appreciation to the police for the scholarship and for catering for my family."
