Nigeria's oldest ever drug dealer faces life in jail as 72 year old pleads guilty to trafficking

altNIGERIA looks set to convict its oldest ever drug dealer after 72 year old Samuel Akhigbe pleaded guilty to a charge of unlawful dealing in a banned drug brought against him by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

 

Arraigned before a Federal High Court in Lagos, Mr Akhigbe was charged before Justice Saliu Saidu with illegal dealing in 3.3kg of Indian hemp. Prosecution counsel Jeremiah Aernan, had told the court that Mr Akhigbe committed the offence on November 9, 2015 at Command Road, Ipaja, in Lagos State.

 

According to the prosecutor, the offence, violated the provisions of Section 11 (c) of the NDLEA Act, 2004. In response, Mr Akhigbe, who told the court that he was suffering from tuberculosis, pleaded guilty to the charge.

 

When the charge was read to him, he replied: “I am guilty.” Following his guilty plea, the prosecutor asked for a new date, for review of facts of the case and sentencing.

 

Judge Saidu then informed the accused that the offence of drug trafficking attracts a term of up to life imprisonment if he is convicted. He then ordered that the accused be remanded in prison and adjourned the matter until March 12 for trial.
