Pregnant Lagos woman beaten unconscious over dispute about cow foot (ponmo) stench

altLAGOS resident Deborah Samuel has had to flee for dear life after one her neighbours beat her into unconscious last week in protest at the stench of the cow skin meat popularly known as ponmo which his wife regularly cooked.

In a bizarre development, the pregnant Ms Samuel, 36, has fled her Ijegun home in Lagos State, following alleged threat to her life by a male co-tenant who beat her up over a cooking disagreement. Trouble started for Ms Samuel after she asked her neighbour to move a bowl soaked with ponmo from her window at Olaniran Crescent around the Oluwashehu Ayo area of Ijegun.

Her request turned out to be her greatest undoing as the neighbour identified as Baba Miracle, pounced on her until she passed out. Narrating her ordeal after she was discharged from a private hospital around Ijegun, where Mrs Samuel said attempts to get the police to act on the matter failed, hence why she had to flee.

Ms Samuel added: “As if the beating was not enough, he threatened that he would kill me, boasting that nothing will happen because he has a brother who is a divisional police officer that will defend him. Baba Miracle and his family occupy a flat upstairs, while we live in the back flat down stairs and his wife sells cow skin, whose stench inconveniences other tenants.

“As usual, she brought some fresh ponmo and started burning it last week and all the tenants complained about the position of burning but they refused to heed to our pleas that they should move it away from my window. Because of my present state, I left the house and sat outside until my husband arrived and unable to stand it, my husband went to the back yard to wash the water that was dripping from the basin of ponmo, in order to reduce the odour.”

She added that to her surprise, the next day, after her husband left for work, Baba Miracle was heard bragging that he was not satisfied with the slap he landed on her husband’s face and boasted that he would kill a member of their family. Scared by the comment, Ms Samuel left the house for her husband’s place of work but while waiting for him at the reception, Baba Miracle came there and continued the threaten her until he was asked to leave the premises by the private guards.

On her way home, he then ambushed Ms Samuel and beat her until she passed out, only to be resuscitated in hospital.  After she was discharged, the Samuels who only moved into the building four months ago relocated to a relation’s place around Isheri-Oshun.
