Abike Dabiri-Erewa named as Buhari's special assistant on foreign and diaspora affairs

altPRESIDENT Muhammadu Buhari has appointed Hon Abike Dabiri-Erewa as his senior special assistant on foreign affairs and the diaspora as part of a major shake-up that has involved him relieving the heads of 24 parastatals of their jobs.

Hon Dabiri-Erewa, 53, is highly experienced in foreign affairs having served as the chair of the House of Representatives Committee on Diaspora Affairs in the last parliament. A very senior and highly respected member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), she moderated the party's last convention which elected President Buhari as it presidential candidate.

At the last elections, Hon Dabiri-Erewa decided to stand down as the legislator representing the Ikorodu constituency in Lagos State.  This prompted a lot of speculation regarding her future, with political pundits associating her with all kinds of jobs, including Lagos State deputy governor, Nigeria's permanent representative to the United Nations and the high commissioner to the UK.

With her latest appointment, however, this speculation should stop as she will be expected to advice President Buhari as he seeks to appoint ambassadors and high commissioners. Nine months into office, President Buhari is yet to name ambassadors and is also yet to appoint heads to all the nations' parastatals.

Today, however, he made the first step towards resolving this as he relieved the heads of 24 agencies, including the bosses of six information-related parastatals, of their jobs. Among those removed from office include Sola Omole of the Nigerian Television Authority, Ladan Salihu of the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, Sam Worlu of the Voice of Nigeria, Mike Omeri of the National Orientation Agency, Emeka Mba of the National Broadcasting Commission and Ima Niboro of the News Agency of Nigeria.

All the sacked news-related parastatal heads reported to the information minister and with their removals, the most senior officials in the various establishments will take charge for now. Information minister Alhaji Lai Mohammed who announced the changes, thanked the former executives for their service to the nation and wished them the best of luck in their future endeavours.
