EKITI State governor Ayo Fayose has stressed that his Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) made a huge mistake in fielding Dr Goodluck Jonathan as its presidential candidate during the last elections which is what led to its defeat.
A fierce critic of the government of President Muhammadu Buhari and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Governor Fayose has been the unofficial mouthpiece of the PDP since it lost power in May last year. In those elections, President Buhari defeated Dr Jonathan, to become the first candidate to emerge victorious over a sitting president in Nigeria's history.
Yesterday, Governor Fayose attributed the PDP's loss at the polls to Dr Jonathan, saying fielding him was a miscalculation by the party. According to Governor Fayose, defeat could have been averted had the party fielded a northern candidate.
Governor Fayose said: “We lost the election because we did not pick our candidate from the north, not because Jonathan as a person was bad, it was just a political miscalculation. The fact is that my former president, Goodluck Jonathan, tried his best.
“But if I were him, I would not have contested at all. If he did not contest and the PDP lost out, he will still be an honourable man and if he had given that opportunity to the north, those who defected from the PDP would not have defected."
He added, Jonathan did his best and so he will still continue to support him even if he is the only man standing. Governor Fayose said he was not there when they took the decision about Dr Jonathan becoming the flag-bearer of the party but it no longer matters.
“A man is not measured by the amount of food he has and the amount of properties he owns and sometimes sickness is good as it reshapes your life. Sometimes poverty is good too as it helps your life, just as sometimes failure makes you to reorder your life," Governor Fayose added.
He added that although the PDP was going through challenges at the moment, it could still come out of them before the next round of elections. Governor Fayose said he has no plans to run for presidency come 2019.
