Massob threatens to shut down southeast unless government grants it referendum

altMOVEMENT for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (Massob) campaigners have threatened that they will shut down economic activities across the southeast unless the federal government agrees to conduct a referendum on their demand.

Over recent months, Massob and other groups like the Independent People of Biafra (Ipob) have been agitating for the creation of the defunct republic of Biafra that existed briefly between July 1967 and January 1970. Their campaign has gathered strength since the arrest of Radio Biafra director Nnamdi Kanu in October.

However, their campaign has fallen on deaf ears as Mr Kanu has been arraigned in court and charged with several offences. Exasperated with their inability to make any headway, Massob has threatened to make Nigeria ungovernable if the government fails to grant it what they see as their freedom.

Massob's director of information, Samuel Edeson, said: “We shall use everything at our disposal to fight Nigerian government especially through civil disobedience. We are going to call for sit at home in all Biafraland and Lagos.

"Massob will also drag former president Olusegun Obasanjo to the International Criminal Court for all the atrocities he has committed against Biafra since 1970, the massacre of the Odi people, the Tiv, Jukun people and the massacre of Massob members in Aba, Okigwe and Onitsha, including the killing of six Igbo traders in Apo, Abuja. Massob will also be taking her campaign to the United States of America, the United Kingdom, France and Chinese embassies in Abuja."

He added that Massob calls on all the people of the old Eastern Region, Delta and parts of Kogi and Benue States to support the referendum that would soon take place in Biafraland. Adding that their freedom is non-negotiable, Mr Edeson echoed the popular view that Biafra could be achieved without taking up arms.
