MUSLIM clergyman Alhaji Ibrahim Ahamido has been arrested by the Maroko Police Division in Lagos State and charged to court for defrauding a trader after his attempt to convert N350,000 (£1,265) into N5m (£18,000) using special magical powers failed.
Last week, Alhaji Ahamido, 47, collected the money from trader Sarah Moses with a promise that he had the ability to multiply the cash and turn it into a fortune. However, he was unable to pull off the stunt and the trader reported him to the police in the Lekki area of Lagos State, who promptly arrested the clergyman known as Alfa.
In December last year, Ms Moses was introduced to Alhaji Ahamido at a restaurant in Lekki after the clergyman boasted that he had special powers that could multiply money after prayers. On February 22, this year, Alhaji Ahamido collected the N350,000 from Sarah and promised to boost her business by turning the money to N5m but he then absconded with the cash after giving his girlfriend, Musa Hauwa N100,000 of it.
One source said: “The woman initially did not believe him so, he promised to help her bring out her child, who at the time was arrested by the police for an offence he committed. He prepared some concoction for her and just like that, the woman’s son was released.
“Sarah was immediately convinced and she trusted him, so later asked him for help concerning her business, which was not doing well. He then asked her to give him the N350,000 so he could turn it to N5m and Sarah said she believed him and gave him the money."
Ms Moses then told the clergyman that she would be travelling to Ghana in December 2015 to return in January this year. He then gave her something to put under her pillow, adding that when she returns from her trip, she should check the pillow and the N5m would be there.
However, Ms Moses added: “When I returned, I checked under the pillow but I did not see any money. I called him to inform him and he said it was my fault because I did not come back on time.
“He said the money came out from the container he gave me but when I did not pack it on time, it went back. He then asked me to pay another N9,000 so that he could make another charm to repair the damage."
She added that it was after she gave him the next tranche of cash and he disappeared that she knew I was dealing with a fraudster. Upon his arrest, Alhaji Ahamido said he did not mean to dupe the trader and tried to multiply the money but the charm failed.
However, the police have arraigned the clergyman and his girlfriend before an Igbosere Magistrate’s Court on two counts of obtaining under false pretences. According to police prosecutor Sergeant Cyriacus Osuji, the offences were punishable under sections 409 and 312 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, Nigeria, 2011.
Alhaji Ahamido pleaded guilty to the charge, whereas his girlfriend, Hauwa, said she was not guilty. In her ruling, the magistrate, Mrs JOA Adepoju, admitted Hauwa to bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum and then adjourned the matter till March 2 for further hearing.
