New Ooni of Ife Oba Enitan Ogunwusi's bodyguard shot dead close to his palace

altSUSPECTED armed robbers have shot dead Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) official Marcus Olatunji who serving as a bodyguard to the new Ooni of Ife Oba Enitan Ogunwusi.

 

In the development certain to raised eyebrows, Mr Olatunji, was on his way to buy airtime at a nearby kiosk in Ile-Ife when he was shot dead by the robbers believed to be coming from an operation. Taken unawares, Mr Olatunji who was armed himself, could not draw his firearm in time and upon killing him, the robbers made away with his pistol.

 

NSCSDC spokesman Wale Folarin, confirmed the incident and assured that the service would get to the root of the matter. Olafare Moses, the Ooni's spokesman confirmed the story too, saying the monarch received the news with shock.

 

Mr Folarin added: “It is true one of our officers attached to the Ooni’s palace was shot dead by some unidentified persons in front of a private residence of the Ooni. The killers went away with his gun.

 

"He died at the teaching hospital, Ife. We have arrested three suspects in connection with the crime and investigations continue as the command will get to the root of the matter.”

 

Last October, Oba Ogunwusi, 40, a real estate magnate was named as the 51st Ooni of Ife to take over from Oba Okunade Sijuwade who passed away in London after taking ill. Since assuming office, Oba Ogunwusi has embarked on a tour of Yorubaland, meeting with other monarchs in a bid to foster unity.
