Senators threatens to seize Goodluck's plot of land in Abuja as it was wrongly allocated

altSENATORS have threatened to seize former president Dr Goodluck Jonathan's plot of land in Abuja along with those belonging to several of his associates after indications that they were allocated without due process and in a manner that smacks of cronyism.

Yesterday, Senator Dino Melaye, the chairman of the Senate Committee on Federal Capital Territory (FCT), issued the threat to revoke the certificate of occupancy on land belong to Dr Jonathan and 29 others in the Maitama district of Abuja. He threatened to do so during a budget defence meeting between the committee and the FCT minister Muhammed Bello on the grounds that the plots of land were allotted on a reserved area.

Insisting that the plots of land allocated to Dr Jonathan and the others fall within an area designated to construct a tourist structure for foreign visitors, Senator Melaye said that his committee had directed that work should stop on construction and buildings in the area. Other his profile members of the Jonathan administration who have plots of land in the area include former justice minister Bello Adoke, former Bauchi State governor, Isa Yuguda, acting Peoples Democratic Party chairman Uche Secondus and the late national security adviser Andrew Azazi.

Following the Senate’s directive to all its standing committees last week to embark on oversight functions of agencies of government under them, Senator Melaye visited the land in Maitama along with members of his committee where they saw workers erecting structures on them. Aside from ordering the workers to stop work, the committee also summoned the FCT minister to appear before it on the matter which he did yesterday.

Meanwhile, senate president, Bukola Saraki has promised that the Senate would immediately after the completion of the on-going process of passage of the Appropriation Bill, commence the amendment of the Procurement Act. He added that certain sections of the act needed to be reviewed to ensure that the scarce resources which are available from the budget are well utilised.
