NEW Super Eagles coach Samson Siasia looks set to recall former skipper Vincent Enyeama and striker Emmanuel Emenike to the squad for next month's forthcoming African Nations Cup qualifiers against Egypt.
Both goalkeeper Enyeama and West Ham target man Emenike retired from international football last year after falling out with the then coach Sunday Oliseh. Last week, however, Oliseh resigned after constant clashes with the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) and repeated disagreements with its technical committee.
Enyeama, who objected to being made second choice, ended a 13-year spell with the national team, while Emenike, the leading goal scorer at the 2013 Nations Cup left after five years with the Super Eagles. Their departure caused some consternation among fans, especially Enyeama's exit as he is one of the best goalkeepers in Europe at the moment.
Following Oliseh's departure, the NFF named Siasia, the U23 team coach as interim manager and he will take charge of the two ties against Egypt due to take place between March 23 and 29. Siasia will be assisted by Emmanuel Amuneke, Salisu Yusuf and Alloy Agu, who have been tasked with qualifying the Eagles for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations.
Siasia said: “It is an emergency assignment. If the NFF say we should do a rescue job, we have to do it for the sake of Nigeria.
“We will go for the best legs, players with commitment, to ensure that we qualify ahead of Egypt. We will look at the players we believe can help the team, including Vincent Enyeama and Emmanuel Emenike who retired from the team last year."
Yesterday, Emenike and compatriot Victor Moses helped West Ham to a 1-0 victory over Sunderland in the English Premiership. Making his first start for the club in the league since joining in the January transfer window, Emenike was in action for 59 minutes, while Moses came off the bench in place of Manuel Lanzini five minutes later.
