Soldiers and policemen engage in free for all fight in Umuahia after parking dispute starts row

altTENSION is brewing in Abia State after soldiers and policemen were involved in a bitter brawl sparked by the troops parking their 18-seaater Mitsubishi bus close to a local police station in the state capital Umuahia.

Descending into a free for all, in which blows were exchange, the fracas started when the divisional police officer (DPO) in charge of Railway Post, Umuahia, ordering his men to molest an army captain, who was responsible for parking the bus close to his station. Apparently, the DPO was driving into the station when he spotted the bus and ordered the owner to re-park it, claiming that it was blocking his way.

However, the Nigerian Army captain, who was not in uniform, was said to have come out, greeted the DPO and quickly tried to re-park his bus. He was not allowed to do this, however, as the police officer ordered him to come closer and explain why he should block his way to the station in the first place.

Sensing trouble, the captain military was said to have pleaded with the DPO and promised to re-park the bus but he refused to allow him remove the vehicle. Rather, the DPO was alleged to have ordered his men to arrest the military officer, who at that juncture identified himself.

“He must obey my arrest order, you people should tell him to obey my arrest order. You must obey my arrest order, you said you are a captain, so you must tell me how many wars you have fought.

“I have fought in three Boko Haram states of Borno, Adamawa and Yobe before coming here, so you must show me your identity today; drag him into the cell now,” the DPO was quoted as saying.

While the argument lasted, four soldiers arrived at the scene and discovered that the man being molested was actually an army captain. They became furious that an officer was calm and pleaded, yet he was being disgraced by the police officer.

One eyewitness said: “They called for reinforcements and within a twinkle of an eye, four Hilux vans loaded with soldiers arrived the police station. They later took away the DPO and another police officer with them to their base, after giving them the beating of their lives."
