STAND-UP comedian Julius Agwu has joined the growing ranks of Nigerian entertainers who have decided to become evangelists after he successfully survived brain surgery involving the removal of two tumours.
One of Nigeria's funniest comedians ever, Mr Agwu, 42, is a University of Port Harcourt graduate, holding a Bachelor of Arts degree in Theatre Arts. He hails from Choba in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State and is a well known actor, compere and comedian.
Last year, he decided to run for Rivers State governor, joining the growing list of celebrities who declared their intentions to run for political office. However, his ambitions were cut short by brain surgery and following the experience, Mr Agwu has decided to become an ambassador for Jesus Christ.
Speaking in Abuja on at his Valentine's Day show, titled Life as I See It, Mr Agwu said his decision to completely surrender to Christ to preach the gospels was informed by his survival of brain surgery. On May 12 last year, Mr Agwu had the surgery in the US, where doctors successfully removed two growths in his brain.
Mr Agwu said: “I am now an evangelist who spread the message of the salvation of God to people, using my gift and platform as a comedian. God gave me a second chance, so I am telling people about his goodness and I am telling Nigerians that God is all they need to live a peaceful and fulfilled life.
“I didn’t know I had turmoil in my brain until I had a seizure and ran out of breath and then I was rushed abroad for an operation. I have seen people die from little ailments that were not as complicated as my case, so I am now a new person, proclaiming the supremacy and care of God over the affairs of men."
He added that the theme of his recent concert was a reflection of the brain turmoil ordeal he survived by the mercies of God. Mr Agwu said he chose Abuja for the show in order to reach out to well meaning Nigerians, particularly the leaders, to embrace the message of positive change.
