SOLDIERS involved in the ongoing fight against Boko Haram have debunked government claims that the sect is virtually defeated confessing that the terrorist still control about four local government areas in Borno State.
In a tape yet to be verified, two soldiers were recorded speaking in an audio message, during which one of them named Sule claimed that Boko Haram is still in possession of large swathes of territory. Based in Maiduguri with the Seventh Mechanised Division of the Nigerian Army, Sule, whose rank was not revealed in the recording, said that the service chiefs were deceiving President Muhammadu Buhari by telling him the battle has been won.
According to the soldier half of Gubio, in Borno State was under the control of Boko Haram, as is the town of Damasak. He added that the helicopter gunships that were brought in from South Africa by former President Goodluck Jonathan, which helped the military achieve success, had been returned, so were no longer at the disposal of the army.
Yesterday, while speaking on the BBC, President Buhari insisted that despite the recent Boko Haram attacks, the sect has been technically defeated. During a recent conference on Syria in London, President Buhari also told delegates that the Nigerian military is winning the war against the terrorists.
President Buhari said: “Well, all I know is that out of the 14 local government areas in Borno State where Boko Haram used to hold and hoist their flag, they are nowhere in charge of any of them again. However, they can still regroup and go after attacking soft targets.”
According to President Buhari, Boko Haram can no longer mobilise enough forces to attack police and army barracks and destroy aircraft like they used to do. Last week, however, the sect did attack Dalori village in Borno State, killing at least 86 persons, burning some children alive in the process.
