Armed robbers beat up car passengers in Benue State for not carrying enough money

altARMED robbers brutally flogged 18 passengers in Benue State yesterday nearly killing them for refusing to cooperate and hand over their valuables or for not carrying enough money after they were waylaid just outside Orokam.

Across Nigeria, armed robbery along inter-city highways is a common occurrence, with hoodlums targeting travellers, fleecing them of money and valuables. Yesterday, dare devil robbers numbering about three, who were armed with dangerous weapons, ambushed the road users and carted away their valuables.

One of the victims, who simply identified himself as Sunny, said that some of the passengers who refused to cooperate were beaten mercilessly. He added that the robbers, who struck just 12km outside Orokam, also descended on those passengers who they felt were not carrying enough valuables.

Sunny said: “I was nearly shot because I tried to drag with them. They hit my head with a gun because I confronted one of them and other people who were not with enough money were almost beaten to death.

"When they asked me to bring out money, I tried to prove stubborn and one of them angrily hit my head with his gun. They collected over N350,000 (£1,242) from me and my wife was with another 150,000 (£530) in her bag, which they also made away with it."

He added that he and his wife were heading to their village to complete a building project but with the robbery, the money is now gone. According to Sunny, they were attacked after they had descended from the Okwuja Hills, along the Orokam-Owukpa Highway.

“When I first sighted them from afar, I thought they were police officers and I had to stop for them but before I realised it, three guys surrounded my vehicle with guns pointed at me, asking us to come down. I met other passengers who were robbed and beaten mercilessly on the floor," Sunny added.

Another victim said while the robbery operation lasted, security personnel were nowhere to be found. He added that after the incident, they ran to the police station in Ukwo but no one was on ground to attend to them.
