Delta State government initiates plans to build monorail network in capital Asaba

altDELTA State government has kicked off ambitious plans to build a monorail transit network in Asaba as part of a desperate attempt to address the growing problem of urban mass transit that afflicts most Nigerian cities.

Like most other state capitals, Asaba has no public transportation network and people rely on private cars and commercial vehicles to get around. This not only cerates huge traffic jams but also creates environmental problems and leads to rapid deterioration of the road network die to an over-reliance on it.

In a bid to address the problem, the Delta State government has engaged a consultant to carry out a feasibility study on Monorail Transit System. Patrick Ukah, the Delta State information commissioner, said that the government plans to undertake a study on the viability of mono-rail transit system and fit it into the Asaba Development Master Plan.

He added that the state government had decided to proceed with the project because of the increasing population in Asaba. One other major infrastructural plan the state government has is to sell the Independent Power Plant project in Oghara, in Ethiope West Local Government Area of the state.

Newworld Safugha, the commissioner for energy, said that the state government was looking into the process of completing the sale as recommended by the last administration.
