EFCC seizes $1m in cash from the home of former chief of defence staff Alex Badeh

altECONOMIC and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) operatives have recovered $1m in cash from one of the houses belonging to the immediate past chief of defence staff Air Chief Marshal Alex Badeh.

Marshal Badeh is one of those under investigation in the ongoing $2.1bn Dasukigate scandal during which money meant to buy military equipment for the armed forces to fight Boko Haram was diverted into private pockets. He is currently in detention facing charges and yesterday, the EFCC searched his mansion located at 6, Ogun River Street, Maitama in Abuja, where they found the cash.

One EFCC detective said: “We have seized several properties belonging to Badeh and a few days ago, we returned to the mansion located at 6, Ogun River Street, Maitama. In the presence of several witnesses, including neighbours, we searched the house and recovered $1m in cash, which has been lodged as evidence.”

Said to be worth over N1.1bn (£3.8m), the building where the money was found is one of the five properties seized from the ex-defence chief. It has now been cordoned off with an EFCC seal placed across the gate, with the warning EFCC, Keep off written over the fence.

Marshal Badeh also allegedly bought a commercial plot of land at Plot 1386, Oda Crescent, Cadastral Zone A07, Wuse II, Abuja for N650m. He was also said to have paid N878m for the construction of a shopping mall at Plot 1386, Oda Crescent, Cadastral Zone A07, Wuse II, Abuja and another sum of N304m to complete the construction.

According to the EFCC, Marshal Badeh also paid out N260m to purchase a duplex at No. 19 Kumasi Crescent, Wuse II, Abuja, for his son. In addition, the sum of N60m was said to have been paid for the renovation of the property and another N90m to furnish it, while a further N330m was paid to one Honourable Bature to purchase a duplex at No. 14 Adzope Crescent, Off Kumasi Crescent, Wuse II, Abuja.

In the charges, signed by the EFCC’s deputy director, legal and prosecution department, Aliyu Yusuf, the anti-graft agency alleged that Marshal Badeh removed the sum of N3.9bn from the accounts of the Nigerian Air Force. Last week, however, Marshal Badeh denied ownership of the properties seized by the anti-graft agency.
