BAYELSA teenager Ese Oruru who has been the subject of a national outrage after she was abducted and coerced into a forced marriage in Kano has returned home but a medical examination has confirmed she is five months pregnant.
Over the last week, 14-year old Ese caught national and international attention after it was discovered that she had been abducted from her home in Bayesla State by a man known as Yunusa. He then took her to the northern city of Kano, forcefully converted her to Islam, changed her name to Aisha and made her live with him in the Emir of Kano's palace.
Following the bringing of the matter to national attention, the Emir of Kano Alhaji Lamido Sanusi Mohammed, ordered Ese's immediate release. Subsequently, the police have returned her to her parents but her father Charles Oruru, said they have now discovered that she is five months pregnant.
Mr Oruru revealed this while speaking at the Bayelsa State Government House when he was briefing Governor Seriake Dickson on issues surrounding the abduction of his daughter. Governor Dickson had promised to be responsible for Ese's well being once she was returned to the state.
Meanwhile, Yunusa's father has declared that his son cannot marry the teenager from Bayelsa State because he is engaged to another girl in Kano. Dahiru Bala, Yunusa’s dad made the declaration at his country home at Kauyen Tofa in Kura Local Government Area of Kano State.
He also said he did not support the relationship between his son and Ese because of its illegality and it is against his religion. Mr Bala 55, also said that he reported the matter to the local authorities when his son, who he said was 25, informed him of his decision to elope with his lover.
“There was no marriage between my son and Ese Oruru because it is illegal. I promptly reported the matter to the village head and on their arrival they were taken to his home who in turn reported to the district head at Kura, the headquarters of Kura Local Government Area,” Mr Bala added.
Nigeria's women's affairs minister Hajiya Aisha Alhassan has vowed that those responsible for the abduction of Ese abduction and forceful entry into a marriage in Kano will be prosecuted. Also, Emir Sanusi Lamido Mohammed has distanced himself from the marriage, saying it is un-Islamic.
