Gay man dies from internal bleeding in Ondo after being beaten to death by irate mob

altGAY man Akinnifesi Olumide Olubunmi has died in hospital after succumbing to injuries he received from a severe beating he got from a homophobic mob who attacked him in Ondo West Local Government Area.

On January 7 2014, President Goodluck Jonathan signed Nigeria's Draconian Same Sex Marriage Prohibition Bill into law, which makes being gay punishable with 14 years in jail. Since the passing of the law, anti-gay vigilantes have swung into action attacking suspects, while the Sharia police the Hisbah has been going round northern Nigeria rounding up suspects.

Mr Olubunmi, a well known homosexual in his community was accused of being gay and was attacked by an irate mob of vigilantes. He was later rushed to hospital but his injuries were so severe that he has died, prompting homophobic activists to celebrate his death on his Facebook wall.

One Ogbeni Ade Omo Ade, wrote: “End of a gay. This will serve as a lesson to all the people that loves engaging in bisexual, homosexual, lesbianism and gay activities."

Apparently, Mr Olubunmi was caught having sexual intercourse with a man identified as Dotun, a serving supervisory councillor in Ondo West Local Government Area of Ondo State. He was consequently beaten mercilessly and later rushed to hospital but he died of internal bleeding.

His partner, Dotun is still on the run although his properties have being destroyed with his house and family’s house burnt down by the mob. It is not yet clear if the police will be taking any action against the culprits or not.
