GOLDEN Eaglets skipper Kelechi Nwakali has signed a five year deal with English Premiership side Arsenal worth around £3m that will see him officially become a Gunner when he turns 18 in June.
Following Nwakali's heroics during last year's U17 World Cup, several European sides looked at signing him and after considering several offers, he has opted for Arsenal. At the tournament in Chile, Nwakali was awarded the golden boot having been judged the best player of the tournament that Nigeria won.
After weighing up all his options, Nwakali, who currently plays for the Diamond Football Academy in Nigeria, has announced that he will sign the official deal in June. Earlier this week, Nwakali returned to Nigeria from the UK where he had gone to visit the club, inspect its facilities and reach the agreement.
Nwakali said: "I just came back from London and I have signed a five-year contract with Arsenal. So many teams were interested in me but it has been my dream at a tender age to play for Arsenal."
He will join fellow Nigerian Alex Iwobi at the Emirates Stadium when he completes his move to north London. Iwobi, who has been capped on two occasions by Nigeria, has made 11 appearances for Arsenal this season.
During the U17 World Cup, Kelechi not only won the golden ball for being the best player of the tournament but he also won a bronze boot, for being the third highest goal scorer. He is a two-way midfielder who defends, scores goals, drives forward and generally orchestrates things in midfield.
