FORMER president Dr Goodluck Jonathan's uncle and foster father Chief Inegite Jonathan has finally been released from captivity after being held by over a month by armed gun men who kidnapped him from his home in Bayelsa State.
Chief Jonathan, 72, kidnapped at his residence in Otuoke, Ogbia Local Government Area of Bayelsa on February 17, along with a 35-year-old relative Samuel Oki, who was killed by the abductors. He has since been held in the Niger Delta creeks by his abductors who were demanding a ransom for his release.
Yesterday, however, he was released unharmed, although it is not yet clear if any money changed hands between his family and his abductors. Asinim Butswat, a spokesman for Bayelsa State Police Command, confirmed the release of Chief Jonathan but added that the precise details relating to it were not yet available.
Mr Butswat said: “The victim has been released and reunited with his family but I am yet to get the details.”
This is the second time Chief Jonathan has been kidnapped, as he was first abducted on February 28 2014 in his house and was later freed by security agents at Akipli Community in Ogbia on March 10, 2014. This time around though, he was abducted along with Mr Oki, whose remains were found floating in Otuoke's creeks two days after the abduction.
