Kenneth Omeruo ruled out of Nations Cup qualifier against Egypt with groin injury

altSUPER Eagles centreback Kenneth Omeruo has been ruled of next week’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Egypt after picking a groin injury during his last league game for his Turkish clubside Kasimpasa.

Currently in great form, Omeruo had been a sure bet to start against Egypt in the first led of the tie taking place at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium in Kaduna on March 25. Omeruo, 22, signed for Chelsea in January 2012 from Belgian side Standard Liege and was immediately sent out on loan to Dutch side Ado Den Haag but returned to the UK at the start of the 2013/14 season.

Upon his return, Omeruo aggravated a shoulder injury he sustained during the 2013 Confederations Cup that derailed his plans to break into Chelsea's first team but after undergoing keyhole surgery, he was loaned out to Middlesboro. Following a season-long loan with Middlesbrough in the English Championship, Omeruo was sent out to Kasimpasa at the beginning of the current campaign and has been in sparking form since.

Kasimpasa, has informed the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), that the defender has picked up a groin injury and will miss action for the next two weeks. He will not now be released for the game on the 25th or the away leg taking place in Alexandria on Match 29 either.

Super Eagles administrator Dayo Enebi, said: “Omeruo’s injury and subsequent withdrawal from the Egypt games has been communicated to the coaches and the medics. The player is disappointed with his injury setback because he has been looking forward to this game with a lot of optimism and expectedly, the coaches are also unhappy but they have wished him a quick recovery.”

Kasimpasa have an option of signing Omeruo permanently at the end of the season but it appears that the defender would rather return to England. In May 2014, Omeruo signed a new three year deal with the English Premiership champions that will keep him at Stamford Bridge until 2018 and has said he fancies a return there.
