KIDNAPPERS who abducted three senior secondary school (SSS) female students from the Babington Macaulay Junior Seminary School (BMJSS ) in Ikorodu in Lagos State have demanded a ransom payment of N20m (£71,000) per girl.
In a hugely embarrassing crisis for the Lagos State government, the three girls were abducted from the co-educational secondary school owned by the Lagos Anglican Diocese on Monday. On Tuesday, the kidnappers demanded N100m per pupil but after the school and their parents said the amount was too much, the kidnappers reduced their demands to N20m for each of the three girls.
Police have stepped up their search for the three girls Timilehin Olusa, Tofunmi Popoolaniyan and Deborah Akinayo, all SSS2 students, who abducted by men believed to be militants turned kidnappers. One student at the school, who was present during the abduction, said she was fortunate to escape being caught by the gunmen.
She added: “We were reading for our test billed for Tuesday morning that night when we heard the first gun shot. We ignored it, thinking it was fire crackers but then, another shot followed and at that point, we were scared.
One of us jokingly said those people that attempted to strike the other day have come o and upon hearing that, I froze and started praying. Before we could think of the next thing to do, three SSS1 students ran into our class room, screaming robbers, so we all ran out in our confused states, only to bump into four armed men."
She added that they then ran back towards the window and at that point the gunmen started grabbing them. Academic activities are still on hold at the school as students were ordered to remain in their hostels, with strict instructions not to speak to anyone about the ugly incident.
Apparently, the kidnappers have twice contacted Venerable Victor Ayo Olusa, the father of one of the girls Timilehin Olusa and the executive secretary of Lagos Anglican School Management Board. They got his number from his daughter and established contact, demanding the cash.
