PDP vice chairman Uche Secondus released on bail after meeting court's conditions

altPEOPLES Democratic Party (PDP) deputy chairman Prince Uche Secondus has been released on bail yesterday after meeting the conditions laid down by the court in his ongoing corruption case.

On February 24, Prince Secondus was arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over his possible connection with the $2.1bn Dasukigate scam. Over recent months, several leading PDP members have been arrested and charged with fraud for their alleged involvement in the scandal during which money voted to buy arms for the military was diverted into private pockets.

Upon being charged to court, Prince Secondus applied for bail and the judged ruled that he was to produce two sureties with a N750m (£2.66m) bond each as well as submit his passport. Both sureties are to be federal civil servants on Grade Level 17 and last night, he met both conditions.

Prince Secondus’ counsel Emeka Etiaba, said: “The PDP deputy national chairman has been released but under extremely stringent conditions. For a man whose alleged offence has not been proven, he does not deserve stringent bail terms."

Among other things, Prince Secondus is accused of receiving 23 choice vehicles from a business associate of former petroleum minister Diezani Alison-Madueke. He is believed to have distributed these cars to PDP members as part of its re-election campaign.
