Buhari South-East Youth Movement accuses PDP of working against Igbo president

altPRESIDENT Muhammadu Buhari's supporters have accused the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of working against the emergence of an Igbo president as it has written off ever fielding a southeast candidate.

With Nigeria's next elections due in 2019, political jostling has already begun with the PDP and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) already beginning to think about candidates. Nigeria's six geo-political zones have already begun lobbying for positions, especially the presidency and vice presidency.

PDP leaders from northern Nigeria have already insisted that they must produce the next presidential candidate, prompting the Buhari South-East Youth Movement (Bseym) to accuse the party of working against Ndigbo. According to Bseym, going by its recent zoning, the PDP had automatically expunged Ndigbo from the scheme of things.

Bseym’s director-general Nwabueze Onwuneme, said: "We call on Ndigbo, especially the youths and women, to reject the PDP, which has greatly impoverished the zone in their 16 years of misrule. Furthermore, the PDP’s zoning of the presidency to the north ahead of 2019 goes to show the disdain it has for the people of the zone.

"The zoning seriously goes against the spirit of justice, fairness and equity in the rotation of power between the north and south. If peradventure the PDP succeeds, it will extend the Igbo presidency project to the year 2027 from the earlier year 2023 been projected for the emergence of a Nigerian president of Igbo extraction, which would now leave the north there for 12 years as against eight years been projected by the APC."

Urging Ndigbo to reject PDP, the group noted that by the end of President Muhammad Buhari’s second tenure, the time will then be ripe for the Igbos as the only ethnic nationality in southern Nigeria yet to produce an elected president. According to Bsyem, both the southwest and south-south have all had their shots on the presidency of the nation.
