NATIONAL Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) officials have arrested Lagos commercial bus driver Maduewesi Ugochukwu Samuel at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport with 193 wraps of cocaine stuffed inside his stockings.
In one of the biggest drug hauls of recent times, Mr Samuel was arrested as he was attempting to smuggle the cocaine into Nigeria from Dubai. It is estimated that the drugs weighing a total of 3.4kgs were detected during routine screening of passengers disembarking from an Emirates flight from Dubai.
Following the arrest of the drug trafficker, the NDLEA chairman and chief executive Col Muhammad Mustapha Abdallah, has called for stringent monitoring of Dubai-Lagos route by officers. He commended local officers at the airport led by their commander Ahmadu Garba, for apprehending the suspect.
Col Abdallah said: “This is an interesting arrest and I commend the officers for the discovery as the Dubai-Lagos route is gradually gaining notoriety and we are monitoring it closely. Let me assure members of the public that the NDLEA is working very hard in preventing illicit drug production, trafficking and abuse in the country.”
Mr Ahmadu added: “During screening of passengers at the arrival hall, officers noticed that he had some items attached to his legs. It was cleverly done but not good enough to escape our notice.
"When his socks were pulled down, suspected wraps of narcotics found to be cocaine fell down on the floor. He was immediately arrested and taken for further investigation.”
Mr Samuel told narcotic investigators: “I am a commercial bus driver in Lagos but am from Anambra State. My friend who lives outside the country introduced me into drug trafficking and promised to help me with capital to start my business but after sponsoring my trip to Dubai, he told me to smuggle drugs to Nigeria."
He added that he was instructed to conceal the drugs in his socks and that it will not be detected if he did so. According to Mr Samuel, he was hoping to start an electronic business with the proceeds of the crime.
