EFCC seize £2m worth of jewellery from former finance minister Diezani Madueke

altECONOMIC and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) operative have seized jewellery worth £2m and a wrist watch worth £600,000 from former petroleum minister Diezani Alison-Madueke.

Currently facing several corruption charges including allegation of $20bn missing oil money, Ms Alison-Madueke was arrested by the UK's National Crime Agency (NCA) along with four others last October. She is currently out on bail awaiting trial and a sum of £27,000 was seized from her at the request of the EFCC.

Yesterday, the EFCC stepped up the pressure on Ms Alison-Madueke by invading her Abuja home where the jewellery was seized. Operatives also confiscated jewellery belonging to the wife of Jide Omokore, an ally of the former minister and ex-president Dr Goodluck Jonathan, who has been under investigation himself.

It is believed that jewellery valued at £1.4m was recovered from Mr Omokore’s wife after operatives raided her Lagos residence. Mr Omokore is the chairman of Atlantic Energy Drilling Concepts Nigeria and was recently questioned by the EFCC in connection with multi-billion dollar petrol import and crude export deals.

His company was allegedly awarded controlling stakes in two oil blocks – OML 30 and 34 – for just over $50m each, without due process by the Jonathan administration. He is reported to have returned $14m to the federal government after it was discovered that Atlantic Energy Drilling Concepts failed to pay royalties when his friend was in office.
