FORMER Tottenham Hotspurs manager Harry Redknapp is expected to be unveiled as the new Super Eagles manager within the next few days as the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) looks to appoint a new head coach for the team immediately.
Nigeria is currently without a head coach after Sunday Oliseh resigned from his position in March ahead of the African Nations Cup qualifier against Egypt. U23 coach Samson Siasia was drafted in to handle the two-legged tied against the Egyptians and haven failed to qualify for the tournament, he has returned to his job as Olympic coach.
Redknapp, a former Portsmouth, Tottenham, West Ham and Queens Park Rangers manager, was once the favourite to become the England manager before Roy Hodgson was appointed to the position in 2012. Apparently, the NFF have now approached him and he could be named as Nigeria's next permanent manager within a few days.
Last month Redknapp, 69, finished a two-game deal managing Jordan but is now free to prepare for Nigeria’s World Cup qualifier in September. English Championship side Derby County appointed Redknapp as an adviser earlier this year but he has said he does not want the manager's job full time.
Redknapp has worked with ex-Nigerian internationals in the past, notably he worked with Nwankwo Kanu and John Utaka at Portsmouth. Earlier this week, the NFF appointed Salisu Yusuf as the Super Eagles' interim manager to take charge of two upcoming friendlies against Mali in Paris on May 27 and Luxembourg on June 1.
