Google to train 400,000 Nigerians under plan to equip 1m Africans with digital skills

altINTRENET search engine company Google has commenced preparations to train 1m young Africans including 400,000 Nigerians in digital skills in 2017 as part of an ambitious programme to expand its presence in the continent.

Embarking on the scheme as part of its contribution to building Africa’s growing digital economy, Google said it will be supporting its partner, Livity Africa, to run two training programmes. They are called Digify Bytes to give digital skills to young people looking to develop a digital career; and Digify Pro, a three-month immersion programme for digital specialists.

Both programmes have already been launched in Nigeria, Kenya and South Africa and will be scaled to reach more people in the next 12 months. A group of 65 volunteer Googlers from around the world are helping the Livity team with content development, training the trainers and in some cases, delivering the training sessions.

Google said it had also introduced digifyafrica.com, an online-learning portal that would house a range of digital skills courses, available to anyone in Africa for free. Africa is seen as a potential lucrative market where Google believes it can expand its presence significantly.

A Google spokesman said: “The courses are designed to be as light as possible so they don’t eat up valuable data. There are nine training courses already available and Google aims to have 50 available by July.”

Juliet Ehimuan-Chiazor, the country manager of Google Nigeria, added: "The Internet is at the heart of economic growth and the digital skills programme is aimed at helping more Africans play a part in the digital economy. Everyone can succeed online, start a new business, grow their existing one, or share their passion.

“This initiative will help us illustrate that the Internet creates an opportunity and that Google can help grow the digital skills that people need to succeed online. We want to work towards an Africa where millions of youth have the skills to build their future and change the lives of those around them.”
