INDIGENOUS People of Biafra (Ipob) officials have declared that their incarcerated leader Nnamdi Kanu will no longer eat food brought to him by his close family members and inspected by the Department of State Security (DSS) to avoid poisoning.
Since October last year, Mr Kanu has been held in detention and is facing several charges including operating a pirate radio station and treason. He has been fed with food brought to him by his family members but under DSS rules, anything brought in must be tested and tasted first before given to detainees.
Yesterday, Ipob stepped up the rhetoric in the ongoing battle to secure Mr Kanu's release, stating that they are now fearful he will be killed through poisoning. In further defiance of the government, Radio Biafra which has resumed live broadcasts across the country’s airwaves despite being banned.
In a statement jointly signed by its spokespersons, Emma Mmezu and Dr Clifford Iroanya, Ipob said: “There is serious plan to kill Mr Kanu by his persecutors who are confused on what to do about the charges they preferred against him. We have advised our leader to reject every food, including those brought by close family members because the DSS that always scrutinise his food before allowing it in as might poison the food.
"He will also not mix with other prisoners because we are aware that interior ministry officials working through the Prison Service have planted their agents pretending to be prisoners, in order to spy and report on him to DSS. We have eyes everywhere so we get regular reports on his health status and Nigeria knows the consequences should anything happen to our leader because in every family in Biafra lands are hardcore Ipob members.”
Radio Biafra which has been off the air for some time, is currently streaming live across the Nigerian airwaves via the Internet. Technically, Radio Biafra is airing from 30 Sandlings Close, Pilkington Road, London, SE11 3SY England, United Kingdom.
