POLICE in Katsina State have arrested Umar Manu for killing his wife Fatima Ibrahim in a desperate bid to lay his hands on the wealth left behind to her by her father who passed away in 2014 and left his daughter his wealth.
Mr Manu, a staff of the Federal University Dutsinma in Katsina State, apparently killed his 32-year-old wife, Fatima, over her father’s wealth. Her father, Alhaji Ibrahim Habibu, until his death in December 2014, was a regional manager with a major bank in Sokoto and Fatima inherited a greater part of her dad’s wealth after his death.
Fatima’s uncle Babangida Habibu, revealed that since the death of his brother, Manu went all-out to get his wife’s share of the inheritance divided among late Alhaji Habibu’s children. Manu, who hails from Zaria, Kaduna State, had earlier been threatening Fatima and one day, he called to ask her to make available N800,000 for him to settle some debts and it is believed that when she refused, he killed her.
Mr Habibu said: “On our part as a family, we resolved to do all possible to protect his property and a committee was set up to share the inheritance appropriately, making sure accounts were opened for each and every one, with each share of the money lodged within. About seven months back, my late niece reported her husband’s changing attitude and the family had to intervene and we invited him along with his parents to iron things out but after a while she complained again.
“It was at this point that she chose to move out to a new place, where he still visits on the pretence of wanting to see his three-year-old son. On the day the murder was perpetrated, at about 8.30pm, Manu was in and out of the compound as though he was searching for something, before he finally left after 11.00pm but the next day, Fatima’s maid met her lifeless body on the bed with blood trickling from her mouth and bruises on one side of her face."
According to Mr Habibu, Fatima had always tried to let her husband know that the money he assumes she had was not in her custody but he never wanted to hear that. Upon his arrest, he owned up and confessed to the killing, even narrating how he did it and Mr Habibu said the family want the law to take its course.
